Assessment rather than a blanket judgement
The EU does not approve a technology in the abstract; each application is reviewed separately. The assessment considers potential toxicity, allergenicity, nutritional composition and unintended changes. Authorisation requires the intended use to be assessed as safe.
What labelling means
Labelling and safety assessment serve different purposes. Assessment protects health, while labelling supports informed choice and traceability. The familiar 0.9 per cent threshold is not a general allowance for mixing; it concerns accidental or technically unavoidable traces of authorised GM material.
How to judge claims
Claims that genetic engineering is always dangerous or automatically superior are too broad. Benefits and risks depend on the crop, the introduced trait and the product. Ingredient lists, labelling and the overall quality of the diet remain the most useful practical guides.

- Assess the specific product, not the slogan
- Read labels and ingredient lists
- Separate official information from marketing claims
