Influenza is not an ordinary cold
Influenza often starts suddenly with fever, pronounced fatigue, headache and aching limbs. It can be severe in older adults, pregnant people and those with chronic conditions. Vaccination is intended above all to reduce serious illness and complications.
Who should pay particular attention
STIKO recommends annual vaccination for defined risk groups, including adults aged 60 and over, pregnant people from the second trimester, people with certain underlying conditions and residents of care facilities. Healthcare staff and people with frequent public contact may also be included. A clinician should apply the recommendation to the individual situation.
Timing and preparation
Protection takes time to develop and the vaccine composition is reviewed regularly as circulating viruses change. The decision therefore needs to be revisited each season. Tell the vaccinating clinician about previous reactions, allergies, acute illness and regular medication.
