What the green leaf represents

The EU logo may be used only on certified products that follow organic rules for production, processing, transport and storage. An authorised control body checks compliance. In processed foods, at least 95 per cent of the agricultural ingredients must generally be organic.

What the label does not promise

The logo does not automatically assess calories, sugar, salt or overall nutritional quality. An organic biscuit is still a biscuit, while a conventional minimally processed food can fit a balanced diet. Health effects cannot be read from one symbol.

A practical buying decision

Choosing organic can support particular production principles. Ingredient lists, processing, portion size, variety and individual needs still matter. The origin statement and control-body code help consumers trace the certification.
